How to auto reply to Instagram comments and send the DM that follows
Instagram can answer comments automatically, just not from the app's own settings. Here is what Instagram and Meta Business Suite offer natively, the rules every tool follows, and a step-by-step comment-to-DM setup.

On this page
A comment that says "price?" is a customer asking to buy. If the answer arrives the next morning, they may already have bought somewhere else. Hence the two questions people type into search: how do you set an auto reply on Instagram comments, and does Instagram even have one?
The answers online disagree because they mix up three separate things. The Instagram app automates direct messages, not comments. Meta Business Suite has a comment automation, but only on a computer. Third-party tools work through Meta's API, which limits what any of them can send. This guide takes them one at a time, as they read on October 21, 2026, and then walks through a comment-to-DM setup.
The short answer
- Instagram does have auto replies, but inside the app they cover DMs: up to four frequently asked questions with automated answers, and AI auto replies for some creators. Saved replies are shortcuts you still send yourself.
- For comments, Meta's own option is the Comment to message automation in Meta Business Suite on desktop. It replies to a comment that matches your keywords and then sends the commenter a private message.
- Every tool, Meta's included, follows the same rules: a professional (Business or Creator) account, and one private message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment.
- After that first DM you can only keep messaging if the person replies, and then within 24 hours of their reply. Put the price or the link in the first message.
- eksis adds post-by-post targeting, reply variations, a test mode, and a run history on top of those same rules.
What Instagram offers natively
Here is what Instagram and Meta provide without any third-party app, as of October 2026.
| Feature | Where you set it up | Works on | Sends by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saved replies | Instagram app, professional inbox | DMs | No, you type a shortcut and tap to fill in the text |
| Frequently asked questions | Instagram app, Messages, then Tools | DMs | Yes, each of up to four questions can carry an automated response |
| AI auto replies | Instagram app, Professional dashboard, then Your AI | DMs from an audience you choose | Yes, written by your creator AI |
| Auto reply (also called Instant reply), Away message, Custom keywords | Meta Business Suite, Inbox, then Automations | DMs | Yes |
| Comment to message | Meta Business Suite on desktop | Comments, followed by a DM | Yes |
A few details from Meta's help pages change how useful each one is:
- Saved replies and frequently asked questions are only for Business and Creator accounts. When someone sends one of your FAQ questions, their message lands in your Requests folder, and you have to accept it before you can answer by hand.
- AI auto replies come from a creator AI you build in Meta AI Studio. Replies are labeled "AI · your name", the feature only works in the mobile app, and Instagram says it is being introduced gradually, so you may not have it yet. It answers messages, not comments.
- Custom keyword automations in Meta Business Suite take up to five keywords or phrases, match them case-sensitively, and send after 15 minutes unless you reply first. They respond to messages.
- Turning on Meta Business Agent pauses existing automations such as away messages and instant replies.
The Instagram Help Center pages we read describe automatic responses for chats only. The comment automation Meta documents lives in Meta Business Suite.
How to auto reply to Instagram comments in Meta Business Suite
Your Instagram account has to be connected to Meta Business Suite. Then, on a computer:
- Open Inbox in Meta Business Suite and click Automations.
- Click Create automation, then choose Comment to message.
- Under Channel, select Instagram. Messenger is the other option.
- Add the keywords or phrases that should trigger it.
- Write the private message, with optional media, and the public comment reply, which Meta marks as recommended.
- Click Save changes. You can turn the automation on or off later with the toggle under Status.
Meta's own pages describe the trigger two ways. The overview of Inbox automations says Comment to message replies "to a comment that contains specific hashtags". The desktop setup guide says it answers comments "that contain specific keywords or phrases", and keywords or phrases are what the form asked for when we opened it on October 21, 2026. Meta also notes that some organic messaging features are unavailable for businesses and ads delivered to and from Europe and Japan.
The rules every auto reply tool follows
Meta Business Suite, eksis, and every other tool that replies on Instagram for you work inside the same platform rules. Meta's developer documentation sets them out:
| What the tool does | Meta's rule |
|---|---|
| Uses the API at all | The account must be an Instagram professional account, which can be a business or a creator |
| Replies to a comment in public | Allowed, through the comment replies endpoint |
| Sends the commenter a DM (a private reply) | One message per comment, within 7 days of when the comment was created. On Live, only during the broadcast |
| Sends a second DM | Only if the person responds, and within 24 hours of that response |
| Answers someone who messaged you first | Within the messaging window, which lasts 24 hours for most user actions |
Private replies work on comments on your posts, ads posts, reels, and live stories.
What that means when you set one up:
- The first DM is the only one you can count on. Put the price, the link, or the answer in it, not "message us for details".
- If you want the conversation to continue, end the DM with a question. Their reply opens the 24-hour window for follow-ups.
- The 7 days run from the comment, not the post. A new comment on a reel from last year can still get a private reply.
- Tell people what to type. A caption line such as "Comment LINK and we'll send it to you" gives the automation an exact word to match.
- No tool can like Instagram comments for you. Meta's comment moderation guide covers reading, replying to, hiding, and deleting comments, and liking is not among them.
- Personal accounts are left out entirely. You can switch to a professional account in the app, but professional accounts cannot be set to private.
For narrowing keywords, writing messages that do not read like spam, and setting limits, see our guide to comment and DM automation without getting your account restricted.
Set up Instagram comment auto replies in eksis
eksis connects to Instagram through Meta's API, so the rules above apply, and the Instagram account must be Business or Creator.
- Open Automations and click Browse templates. Price question → DM and Link request → DM are ready-made comment-to-DM flows; click Use template. Create automation starts from a blank one.
- In the Trigger card, set When to "a comment with a keyword". Click Choose posts to pick the posts it should watch, or "or paste a link" for an older one, then select your Instagram account under from account. A comment trigger only watches the posts you add, so add new posts as you publish them.
- Under Conditions, enter the keywords. Matching ignores capital letters. Use Unless for words that should stop it.
- Under Do this, add Reply to comment and use Add a reply variant for alternatives; one is picked at random each time. Add Wait for a few seconds, then Send DM. {name} becomes the person's name, and Add a link button attaches one link.
- Click Test, write a sample comment, and click Run the test. Nothing is actually sent.
- Click Save & activate. View history on the automation's card shows what each run did.
You can also click Create with AI and describe the flow to the AI Assistant, which fills in the editor. Each message uses one AI request, nothing turns on until you save, and you still choose the posts. The replies that go out are the texts in the editor, not new text written for each comment.
The Free plan includes one active automation, and paid plans remove the cap (Compare plans). Comment-to-DM flows run on Instagram and Facebook. On YouTube, Threads, and Bluesky, automations can reply to or hide comments but cannot send DMs. Like comment stays locked for Instagram accounts, because Instagram's API offers no way to like a comment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an auto reply on Instagram?
Yes, but in the Instagram app it covers direct messages. Business and Creator accounts can add up to four frequently asked questions with automated answers, and some creators can turn on AI auto replies. Automatic replies to comments are set up in Meta Business Suite on desktop or through a third-party tool.
Can I auto reply to Instagram comments without a third-party app?
Yes. The Comment to message automation in Meta Business Suite, on desktop, replies to comments that match your keywords and sends the commenter a private message. Your Instagram account needs to be connected to Meta Business Suite first.
Why didn't my automatic DM go out after someone commented?
Check whether the comment is older than 7 days, whether it already received a private reply (Instagram allows one per comment), and whether it actually contained your keyword. The account also has to be Business or Creator. In eksis, View history shows the reason for each run, and a comment on a post the automation does not watch never starts a run.
Can an automation send more than one DM to a commenter?
Not on its own. Meta allows one private message per comment, and a follow-up only after the person responds, within 24 hours of that response. In eksis, the Send follow-up action only goes out while that 24-hour window is open.
Do I need a business account to auto reply on Instagram?
You need a professional account, which can be Business or Creator. Saved replies, frequently asked questions, AI auto replies, and API-based tools all require one. Professional accounts cannot be set to private.
Can I auto reply to comments on older posts?
Yes. The 7-day limit counts from when the comment was written, not when the post went up, so a new comment on an old reel still qualifies. In eksis, add an older post to a comment trigger with "or paste a link".
