The best time to post on X in 2026 for small accounts, according to three studies
Buffer says Tuesday at 9 a.m., Hootsuite says 9 to 11 a.m. late in the week, and Sprout Social says noon to 6 p.m. Here is what the three X studies found, why small accounts see so little either way, and how to test your own hours.

On this page
Three large studies of posting times on X give three different answers. Buffer's analysis of 8.7 million posts puts the best slot on Tuesday at 9 a.m. Hootsuite's 2025 study puts it between 9 and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Sprout Social's 2026 data puts it between noon and 6 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday.
For a small account the bigger question is whether timing shows up at all. Buffer's study of 18.8 million X posts found that from March 2025, regular accounts without X Premium had a median engagement rate of 0%, which Buffer reads as at least half of those accounts getting no likes, replies, or reposts on a typical post. This article compares the three studies as they read on October 24, 2026, then explains how a small account can test its hours when most posts get almost nothing.
The short answer
- Start with a weekday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Buffer and Hootsuite both point there.
- Test one early-afternoon slot against it, such as Wednesday at 1 p.m., since Sprout Social's window runs from noon to 6 p.m.
- Skip evenings and Saturdays for anything important. Buffer finds 6 to 11 p.m. the weakest stretch, and all three studies rank weekends low.
- If your account is small, judge your test by impressions per post, not likes. Likes may be too few to compare.
- Leave links out of test posts. Buffer found link posts from regular accounts had a median engagement rate of 0% from March 2025.

Where the studies agree
- Midweek is strongest. All three rank Tuesday through Thursday among their best days.
- Mid-morning is the common ground for two of them. Buffer's daily peaks sit at 9 or 10 a.m. on every day, and Hootsuite's fall between 8 a.m. and noon.
- Weekends are weak. Buffer calls Saturday the worst day, Sprout Social lists weekends as the worst days, and Hootsuite's best days are all weekdays.
- The times are local. Buffer and Sprout Social state their times in local time, and Hootsuite normalized its data across 118 countries.
Where they disagree
Morning or afternoon
Sprout Social's window starts at noon, the hour Buffer's mornings end. Buffer and Hootsuite say mornings, Sprout Social says afternoons, and their windows barely touch.
Friday
Hootsuite puts Friday among its three best days. Buffer ranks Friday second-worst, ahead of only Saturday, and Sprout Social leaves Friday out of its best days for X.
Buffer's page and its headline
The page is titled as an analysis of 1 million posts, while the body describes more than 8.7 million. The times match Buffer's separate 2026 State of Social Media Engagement report, which gives X a window of 6 to 11 a.m. on weekdays, peaking Tuesday at 9 a.m., so we use the body's figure.
Why the answers differ
They count different things
Buffer ranks hours by engagement rate, which divides interactions by the number of people who saw the post. Sprout Social counts the total volume of engagements, which grows whenever more people are scrolling. A busy afternoon can lead on volume while a quieter morning leads on rate.
They study different accounts
Each sample comes from the company's own customers, and Sprout Social's runs over the end-of-year holidays. Hootsuite's covers posts from 118 countries without saying how many were on X.
Premium splits the network
Buffer's X Premium analysis covered 18.8 million posts from 71,000 accounts between August 2024 and August 2025, about 27% of them on a Premium tier. Premium accounts got around ten times the median reach of regular accounts. Regular accounts typically drew fewer than 100 impressions per post, and their median engagement rate fell to 0% by March 2025, while Premium tiers sat around 0.5%. A timing study that mixes both groups is mostly describing the accounts that get distribution.
What a small account can expect
The numbers are small on X for most accounts, whatever the hour.
- Buffer's analysis of 1.7 million posts on X, Threads, and Bluesky found that half of all posts on each network received four or fewer engagements in 2024. X's average was 328 because a few posts go very far, and its spread was the widest of the three.
- Socialinsider's 2026 benchmarks, built on brand accounts with 1,000 to 1 million followers, put X's average engagement rate by followers at 0.12% in 2025, the lowest of the four networks it covers.
- Buffer's engagement report says text posts lead on X (3.56% median engagement rate), followed by images (3.40%), video (2.96%), and links (2.25%), measured by reach.
What this means for a test: if a post usually gets two likes, the difference between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. is lost in noise. Impressions still run to dozens per post when likes are in single digits, so they show more clearly whether a slot puts the post in front of people.
Test your own best time on X
- Pick two slots, one from each camp: Tuesday at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at 1 p.m., for example.
- Post text-only or image posts in both slots for four weeks, with no links. Buffer's Premium study found links suppressed for regular accounts, and one link post can skew a slot.
- Record impressions per post as the main number, and likes, replies, and reposts as a second check.
- Reply to people who reply. Buffer's engagement report measured a lift of about 8% on X when accounts replied, though it calls this its least certain result.
- Keep the slot with more impressions per post, swap the other for a new candidate, and repeat.
Buffer notes that X's own analytics now sit behind X Premium, so a free account may need another way to read its numbers.
Measure and schedule X posts in eksis
Read your numbers
eksis reads impressions, likes, replies, reposts, quotes, bookmarks, and profile clicks for X posts you publish through it. Click your X account in the sidebar and open Insights. The Post performance table shows impressions under Reach, and the Eng. rate column divides likes, replies, reposts, quotes, and bookmarks by impressions.

The Best hours to post chart groups your posts by the hour they went out, in your workspace time zone, and ranks those hours by average engagement. An hour needs two posts with numbers before it can rank ahead of the others, and a single-post hour is drawn faded. For a small account, sort the table by Reach to compare impressions slot by slot.
One limit is specific to X: eksis does not import posts you wrote directly on X, because X charges for each read. The chart and table only reflect posts sent through eksis, so schedule every test post from eksis. The chart shows hours, not weekdays, and eksis stops updating a post's numbers 30 days after it goes out.
Schedule a post for that hour
- Click Create post and pick your X account.
- Write the post. The counter follows X's rules, which count a link as 23 characters and an emoji as two. Under Who can reply, choose who may answer.
- Click Edit next to Publish time, pick the day and hour, and click Schedule.

Publish times follow Settings, General, Time zone. Replies to your posts arrive in the Inbox, where you can answer, hide, or like them.
What X posts cost in eksis
Posting to X uses X credits. The Free plan has no X publishing. Starter includes 15 credits a month, Premium 100, and Agency 300. A plain post takes 1 credit and a post with a link takes 13, and plan credits cover at most 2 link posts a month. A test of three link-free posts a week uses about 13 credits a month, inside Starter's allowance. Extra credits come in packs of 50 for $3, 100 for $5.50, or 500 for $25, and purchased credits do not expire. See the X integration or compare plans.
Timing is one part of the post
On X the account's reach sets the ceiling, and the first line decides whether anyone stops. If you also post to Threads and Bluesky, our guide to cross-posting to Threads, Bluesky, and X covers the length and link differences. For posting volume, see how often to post on social media.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to post on X?
Buffer names Tuesday at 9 a.m., Hootsuite names 9 to 11 a.m. from Wednesday to Friday, and Sprout Social names noon to 6 p.m. from Tuesday to Thursday. A weekday morning around 9 or 10 a.m. midweek is the safest first test, with an early-afternoon slot as the comparison.
What is the worst time to post on X?
Buffer finds evenings from 6 to 11 p.m. weakest on every day, with Saturday the worst day. Sprout Social lists weekends and early mornings, and Hootsuite says before 5 a.m.
Does posting time matter for a small X account?
Less than reach does. Buffer found regular accounts typically got fewer than 100 impressions per post and a median engagement rate of 0% in 2025. Timing still helps a post reach the followers you have, but measure it with impressions, since likes are too few to compare.
Should a small account pay for X Premium?
Buffer's data shows Premium accounts got about ten times the median reach of regular accounts, with the biggest jump at the Premium tier rather than Basic. Whether that is worth the fee depends on how much your business relies on X. The data describes accounts that chose to pay, which may differ from yours in other ways.
Can eksis show my best time to post on X?
On plans with Analytics, yes, for posts you publish through eksis. Best hours to post ranks your hours by average likes, replies, reposts, quotes, and bookmarks. eksis does not import posts written directly on X, so schedule your test posts from eksis.
